Dog Breeds for Kids

Welcoming a dog into your family can be a highly rewarding decision. Of course, it is important to select the right pet for your family. These are some of the most highly recommended breeds for children:

• Labrador retriever. It’s probably not surprising to see this breed on the list; many consider them the quintessential family dog. This is easy to understand, given their sweet temperament and non-aggressive nature. They are also loyal and always eager to play.
• Greyhound. Their high intelligence makes greyhounds fun and engaging pets. Their famously high energy also makes them perfect for families who love outdoor activities and lots of trips to the park. They are generally patient with children and extremely loyal.
• Newfoundland. The Newfoundland is most highly recommended for families with plenty of extra space; they can grow to be over two feet tall and weigh up to 150 pounds. Despite their large size, however, they are known for being extremely sweet and mild mannered. They are also very intelligent and love to play with kids.

Important Facts to Keep in Mind

First, it is very important to note that a dog’s breed is not his or her destiny. While certain breeds have been bred to have certain traits, there are always exceptions to every rule. There are aggressive labs in the world as surely as there are sweet and loving pit bulls.

Similarly, just because certain breeds have high reputations does not mean a family pet must be a purebred in order to “qualify.” There is certainly nothing wrong with purchasing a purebred from a reputable breeder if you love a certain breed, but it may be best not to dismiss the idea of adopting a mutt.
